After the Exhibition project last year I decided to carry on with projection as I felt that I didn’t have enough time to experiment with projection in the past. I combined this with the video knowledge that I had learnt from my Independent project last year. I found it difficult at the beginning of this project as it didn’t have a theme as such, for me I prefer to have a theme as I feel that they inspire me and spark ideas. I didn’t really know where to begin so I just researched into different forms of projection.
I was inspired by the Leeds Light Night in October; this was the initial starting point of my research. I thought I wanted to project huge images onto grandeur buildings but as time went on I realised it was a little unrealistic. I created a mind map and this really helped me to visually see my ideas. The mind map also created links between my thoughts and ideas too. After looking at artist Ceal Floyer I decided that the projection needed to be a little more playful and creative. I enjoyed building my own Smartphone projector as I prefer to create work physically and by hand. However after playing with the Smartphone projector I realised it wasn’t powerful enough.
I feel that I left it a little too late to find a projector and it seemed they were scarce at Northbrook. I found an overhead projector and I made do! The overhead projector was interesting as I found I was experimenting more with light and transparency. I enjoyed experimenting with different textures, liquids and techniques using the projector. In the end I managed to get hold of a small digital projector however I felt like this wasn’t as interesting and I found that I didn’t really know what to do with it.
Once I started experimenting bubbles and the overhead projector I saw my project start to take shape. I decided to display my work as a video instead of just photographs as I felt that the movement of the experiment added more when it was in video form. I enjoy working with video and I have used it for a few of my projects in the past.
I think that I used too much of my time on the research process of this project which although it was beneficial it meant that I didn’t spend enough time on the creative outcome of the project. For a large part of this project I didn’t really have a great deal of ideas either which made it difficult once I actually had a projector.
If I had more time to spend on this project I feel that it would have progressed further and something even better would have been created. At the crit I was happy with the videos that I presented but I feel that I still hadn’t quite got to the ending point of the project. I had experimented a lot with this project and I enjoyed it as a whole. I’m still not sure whether I would like to carry on with this as part of my Major project or not. If I do I will either carry on experimenting with projection or video work. But I’d like my Major to be different to my Minor project otherwise I may run out of ideas and motivation.
